Shruti Sharma is an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer who secured AIR 1 in the 2021 UPSC CSE examination on her second attempt, scoring 1105 out of 2025. She was born and brought up in Dhampur, Bijnor, Uttar Pradesh, and is currently 27 years old. Her family consists of her father Sunil Dutt Sharma, an architect who runs a construction consultancy firm in Delhi, and her mother Rachna Sharma, a former teacher.
Shruti completed her graduation in History from St Stephen’s College, Delhi, and went on to pursue her post-graduation in Sociology from Delhi School of Economics, New Delhi. During her school days, she was a member of the student executive and was appointed as the secretary of cultural affairs. She spent her school days organizing events, and in college, she actively participated in various types of debates like parliamentary debate, conventional debate, and turn quote style of debating.
Shruti was pursuing postgraduation at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) when she came across Jamia Millia Islamia’s Residential Coaching Academy (RCA), a well-known institution for the preparation of the Civil Services Examination via her father. She appeared for its entrance test for the first time in 2019. A technical issue led her to give the prelims in Hindi during her first attempt. Therefore, she failed the mains by only 1 mark. During her Mock Interview, Shruti Sharma said that she wanted to pursue a career in Civil Services because she believed she had a certain privileged background and always wanted to do something in which she could give back to society in some way. Additionally, she believed that the diversity and the scope that these services provide can be an avenue for great personal growth and learning a lot.
The UPSC Toppers 2021 list was released on May 28, 2022. The prominence of the event was that the top three slots were secured by women, with Ankita Agarwal securing AIR 2 and Gamini Singla securing AIR 3. During her interview, Shruti revealed that she had tried to learn Urdu, and she is an enthusiastic lover of world cinema and has watched a wide variety of cinema, including Iranian films and the films of Hong Kong.
As of 2022, Sunil Dutt Sharma oversees a local school named Bal Gyan Niketan School in his native village Basta. Shruti Sharma’s dream as an IAS officer is to bring many changes to the welfare of society and the people around her. She is thankful to those who supported her in the UPSC preparation journey.
